Queer Monuments
Grant Awarded: $10,000
About
Over the years JC has presented works that explore intergenerational embodied exchange, parallels between the COVID and AIDS pandemics, and kinship between queer elders and younger generations. JC will focus on a project that explores the (in)visibility of queer history, using augmented reality (AR) technologies to draw attention to this. JC will work from the Gay and Lesbian Archive of WA and the oral histories of elders and peers, employing drawing and sculpting practices alongside AR to imagine queer memorials. These will be translated into virtual sculptures which will be placed in locations around Perth and monuments that can be taken to queer communities, organisations, and festivals around the world.

Impact
JC's primary focus is on sharing stories of queer struggles, resilience, and courage with both the LGBTQIA+ and broader communities through these invisible, but discoverable, public artworks. These installations, strategically placed at significant sites for the LGBTQIA+ community, are designed to be discovered using personal devices, embracing a tech-savvy younger generation. The LGBTQIA+ community comprises approximately 10% of the general population, spanning diverse demographics. JC will create a website hosting augmented reality artworks and research. Social media platforms, particularly Instagram via Meta's SparkHub XR platform, will play a crucial role in sharing and generating content. Collaboration with WestPride Archives and WAAC will connect JC with their communities. By unveiling queer history at significant sites, making the invisible visible the hope is to foster a connection with Perth's queer past, instill a sense of pride and celebration for the LGBTQIA+ community while also enriching the broader historical narrative of the region.
